COMPETITION
Good sportsmanship is expected. We don’t want any clowning around or you’ll be red-nosed for the entire game – we have noses on stand-by.
REFEREES
We will supply one referee for each game, you are to supply the other (coordinate with other teams). If you’re playing in the 7.20pm game, team A (first team on draw) is to supply a referee for the first game at 6.35pm.
SELWYN SOCIAL BASKETBALL RULES
Rules below are enforced by the referee:
- There must always be 3 guys and 2 girls on the court.
- Guys guard guys and girls guard girls – guys cannot block a girl’s shot, or steal the ball from her when she is dribbling.
- No free throws as it slows the game down – therefore any foul in the act of shooting is “basket counts.”
GAME PRINCIPLES
- This isn’t the National Basketball League. It is a social competition with a huge range of basketball experience. Please use this competition to gain some fitness, be social and have fun.
- Referees have no hesitation to sideline overly abrupt and aggressive players. Referees are doing their job, please don’t hassle them. We will do our very best to keep aggressive and physical play to a minimum. You will be red-nosed if this carry-on does occur.
- Experienced players should not be looking to dominate beginners! New players will be given some leeway on rules like double dribble and travel within reason.
- When rebounding there is to be no pushing or shoving for position
- Any player persistently fouling will be warned by the referee and if continued will be sidelined. Even though fouls are not counted a general rule to keep in mind is if you foul more than four times in a game it is too much.
